Earthquake or Small Voice

Have you ever noticed at what times you rejoice in the LORD the most?

Every Christian has “events” in their lives that fill their hearts with joy and peace.  Sadly many of these positive events are not long lasting.  Satan will send the screams of temptation and the shrieks of trouble and trials into our hearts that try to push the LORD from our hearts.  That need not be.  Enjoy the “big events” in your life.  Also rejoice in the small voice of God that is active in your life every day.  The gospel of Jesus is more important than the big events in our lives and more important than the screams of trouble that Satan encourages.  Don’t become deafened by Satan’s screams so that the joy, forgiveness and peace of the gospel seemingly get smothered.

There seem to be four major types of events that encourage many Christian people. Do any of these fit you?

1) The Major Event

Some are drawn to the LORD and listen to him when they have a major event in their life.  A big event such as a spiritual convention, a mission trip, an inspiring symposium, and a major worship service move their heart to rejoice and call upon the LORD.  He or she certainly loves the LORD each and every day, yet those big events energize them.

On the other hand, when this type of person is not having a major event, they may be tempted to stay away from the LORD or to worry about their life.  The degree to which this person “falls from their joy in Christ” is dependent upon the importance they place on the major event in their lives.  One of the destructive reactions is that they dislike their normal life because it is not a major experience.  They may go so far as to dislike the normal people in their life because that person(s) does not take part in the major events.  This type may become spiritually down because they need a major event to energize.

2) The Major Emotion

The major emotions of joy, peace, marvel, and love are what encourage some Christian lives.  They revel in the feelings that encourage their love of the LORD.  When they feel closer to the LORD they seek to learn and to serve and they seek to share their hope in the LORD.

On the other hand, those who rely upon a strong emotion to feel strong in the LORD or close to the LORD will also experience the obvious.  Our lives will never be lives of constantly high emotions.  We also “come back down to earth.”  The degree to which this type of  person “falls from their joy in Christ” is dependent upon the importance they place on the emotions in their lives.  One of the destructive reactions is that they dislike their normal life because it is does not encourage a major, positive emotion.  They may go so far as to dislike the normal people in their life because that person(s) does not automatically encourage a major, positive emotion.  This type mat become spiritually down during their “normal life” because they need a major emotion to be energized.

3)  The Intellectual Pursuit

This type of person experiences the closeness of the LORD through those intellectual moments they have in the Bible or in spiritual study.

As with the others, when this type of person is not having a major intellectual moment or when someone who does not believe takes the opposite side, they can become weak and deflated in their faith and relationship with the LORD.

4)  The Important people in our lives.

Some are drawn to godly men and women and with their help are strengthened in the LORD and in the faith.

On the other hand, this type may be tempted to feel “low in the LORD” when they are not with others who lift their spirit.

Which of the Four Reflects You?

Or does a combination of the four better reflect what encourages your faith?

Pursue that area or those areas that best strengthen you as a Christian.  Yet be aware of placing too much emphasis on any one or two of those areas.  If you are a major event person, rejoice in those major events, but also recognize the small but powerful voice of God in daily, normal life.  If you are a major emotion person, rejoice in those major emotions, but also recognize the small but powerful voice of God in the daily, normal emotions of life.  If you are a major intellect person, rejoice, but also recognize the small but powerful voice of God in daily, normal thoughts of life.  If people, rejoice and hear the small but powerful voice of God in daily people too.  Our faith rests in Jesus not in the events, emotions, intellect, or people in our lives.

When God told Elijah that they would meet on the mountain there were three huge expressions of power – a wind that could shatter rocks, an earthquake, and a mountain scorching fire.  Yet the LORD was not revealing himself in any of those.  But, after the fire came a gentle whisper.  When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face… (1 Kings 19:11-13).  Most of the time God meets us with a whisper rather than an action of power.  Enjoy the big events in your life, but rejoice the more in the LORD’s constant small voice in your life.
